Zimbabwe: Emmerson Mnangagwa names Emmanuel Mutu at the head of the army

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed Emmanuel Matutu as a new army chief, a few days after relegating the former Chief of Staff, Anselem Sanyatwe, at the less influential post of Minister of Sports.

The announcement was made Thursday evening by Martin Rushwaya, secretary general of the president and the cabinet, who said that Matutu would immediately enter into office. Before this promotion, Matutu held the post of chief of staff in charge of administration in the headquarters of the national army in Harare.

This reshuffle feeds speculations on possible divisions within the ruling party, the Zanu-PF, while Mnangagwa faces growing pressure from former allies.

The sudden dismissal of Sanyatwe at the start of the week raises questions about timing and the reasons for this decision. His transfer to the Ministry of Sports, Arts and Culture is largely interpreted as a demotion, suggesting tensions within the government.

This appointment comes as war veterans are preparing to demonstrate to demand the resignation of Mnangagwa, accusing it of corruption and mismanagement. The political climate remains tense with the approach of the demonstrations scheduled on Monday, led by veterans who were once the president’s faithful support.
