Somalia: the suspense around the candidacy of Hassan Cheikh Mohamoud for 2026
Will Somali President Hassan Cheikh Mohamoud leave his duties at the end of his mandate? The question remains unanswered, says Africanews.
Re -elected in 2022 for a second term, he could legally run a third, the Constitution fixing any limit. For the time being, the suspense remains whole.
In a recent interview with Kenyan media, he has mentioned several criteria that will guide his decision, such as the establishment of a real democratic system and the elimination of threats posed by Al-Shabab, even before projecting himself towards the 2026 election.
Since the fall of the authoritarian regime in 1991, his government is the first to benefit from international recognition and billions of dollars in aid. However, the security situation remains fragile.
As a reminder, on March 18, an explosion of great violence targeted its presidential procession. If Hassan Cheikh Mohamoud came out unscathed, several civilian victims are to be deplored.
