Gabon: ex first lady Sylvia Bongo and her son leave prison but …
After 19 months’ detention, Sylvia Bongo Ondimba, a former Lady of Gabon, as well as her son Noureddin Bongo Valentin, were released from the Central Prison in Libreville.
According to various reliable sources, they were moved to their family home at the sandstone on the past Friday, where they are now under house arrest.
The Gabon government has not yet made an official announcement concerning this information. However, several judicial sources and people close to the case have confirmed this progression.
According to our information, Sylvia Bongo and her son found the ex-president Ali Bongo Ondimba, who has resided at La Sablière since her fall following the coup of August 30, 2023. Even if their detention ended, their freedom remains severely regulated. They must be maintained available for any justice request.
“This change is the result of an agreement,” said a source close to the file to RFI, without providing details or the signatories of this arrangement. The evolution of the status of these two personalities comes a week after the nomination of General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema as president of Gabon.
Sylvia and Noureddin Bongo remain prosecuted for embezzlement of public funds and money laundering. Their lawyers have denounced deplorable conditions of detention for several months at the Central Prison in Libreville.
