Zimbabwe: Starlink submits license application
The Posts and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) is currently considering a license application filed by Starlink, the global satellite internet service provider.
POTRAZ Managing Director, Gift Machengete, confirmed that Starlink had submitted an application for a license to legally operate in Zimbabwe. Although POTRAZ has not yet made a final decision, Machengete said the authority was not blocking the company, but had requested that it disconnect illegal users from its terminals.
In January, POTRAZ warned that distributing and advertising equipment to access Starlink's Internet services without a license was illegal and could lead to arrests. However, Machengete stressed that Zimbabwe is technology neutral and already has geostationary satellites licensed in the country.
Despite this, the trade in Starlink kits has continued in Zimbabwe via social media, raising concerns about the regulation and legal use of satellite internet services in the country.
