The Zambian Government has posted a key milestone in the agenda for Epidemic Control of HIV /AIDS in the nation by 2021.
The latest development is in form of a highly potent drug called Tenofovir Alafenamide (TAF) which is Co-formulated with Emitricitabine and Dolutegravir into one tablet known as TAFED.
Health Minister of the Republic of Zambia, Hon. Dr. Chitalu Chilufya officiated at the launch at the Raddisson Blu Hotel in Lusaka last evening.
The new regimen works to suppress the viral load within 10 to 14 days and can also be administered to children weighing 25kgs and above, as a single tablet on a daily basis.
And Dr. Chilufya announced that Zambia becomes the first country to introduce TAF, which is better and safer tolerated with less bone and kidney side effects.
He said the simplification led to harmonisation of antiretroviral regimens between children and adults provides for better outcomes.
Dr. Chilufya said the new drug is yet another example of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s commitment towards the goal of attaining Epidemic Control of HIV in the nation by 2021 and subsequently, it’s possible elimination by 2030.
He said the unprecedented political will from the President in the agenda for Universal Health Coverage, leaving no one behind needed to be highly commended.
The Minister also took time to thank Cooperating Partners, particularly the United States government for being an all weather Partner in the fight for Epidemic Control of HIV in the country.
