General Abdourahamane Tiani, president of the National Council for the safeguarding of the homeland (CNSP), received the final report of the National Assizes of the Refoundation, organized in Niamey from February 19 to 20, 2025. This ceremony marks a key stage in the political transition process started following the coup of July 2023.
“This process began in 2023 in Agadez with the regional launch of the Assizes, which were held from February 19 to 20, 2025”said General Tiani in his speech.
The president stressed that these meetings, organized at the Mahatma Gandhi conference center and the Palais des Congrès, were open to all citizens. “I had indicated that those who have not yet had the opportunity to participate could do so in the next three weeks. This period was sufficient to allow everyone to contribute ”he added.
General Mohamed Toumba, Minister of the Interior and the Territorial Administration, presented the main recommendations of the Assizes. “” The final report reveals several recommendations made by participants, based on a diagnosis of the socio-economic, cultural and political context of the country ”he explained.
Among the notable resolutions are a transition from “Five years modular” And the promotion of General Tiani to the rank of army general, in recognition of his historical role in the refoundation process. More radical, the report recommends the dissolution of political parties and the adoption of a new charter of political parties, taking into account the socio-cultural realities of the country.
A “Refoundation charter” has also been proposed, and, once adopted, it would become the fundamental law with constitutional value of Niger, according to the minister’s proposals.
Continuing his speech, General Tiani insisted on the importance of national unity to deal with security challenges. “The interests of Niger take precedence over any division, regrouping or clanism. We must ensure the existence of our country for our particular interests to remain. Let’s work for our nation, especially in these difficult times “, He urged.
The president of the CNSP also said “Imported insecurity” and asserted that “We must end the importation of insecurity in our Sahel”. He added: “Let our Sahel become a space of prosperity for all its inhabitants, rather than a place of insecurity, which leads to unnecessary poverty and human losses. »»
“No country has developed in the division or in the clan struggle. No country has flourished without cohesion and without the constructive spirit of all its citizens ”recalled General Tiani, before concluding: “I invite the Nigerien people to learn to forgive themselves and to forget. It can be difficult, but nothing worthy is easy. »»
The presentation of the report of the National Assizes intervenes in a regional context marked by political and security instability in the Sahel, almost two years after the soldiers took power in Niger, leading to a break with several traditional partners, including France, and a rapprochement with Russia.
