DRC: 55 soldiers condemned to death for flight before the enemy in the east of the country

DRC: soldiers evacuated by areas controlled by M23

According to a press release from the International Red Cross (ICRC), a delicate evacuation mission for hundreds of Congolese police and military, trapped in the Camps des Ceques Bois following the conquest of Goma by the M23 armed group, was started on Wednesday, April 30.

The M23, an armed organization supported by Rwanda, experienced a spectacular rise in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), devastated by three decades of conflicts.

He took control of the Great Metropolis of Goma at the end of January, following intense urban clashes which caused thousands of deaths. Hundreds of soldiers, police officers and Congolese militiamen then sought asylum in the UN mission camps.

Once in Kinshasa, the DRC authorities will take care of these people evacuated. The text specifies that “the operation will extend over several days”.

According to security and UN sources, this risky maneuver has been preceded by prolonged negotiations between Monusco, Kinshasa and M23. According to this recent information, the action plan provides that the evacuation convoys initially pass by the road to the front lines managed by the Congolese army, crossing regions dominated by the M23 where local groups frequently lead operations.
