DRC: 10 years of forced labor pronounced against Augustin Matata Ponyo for diversion of public denier
Former Congolese Prime Minister Augustin Matata Ponyo was sentenced Tuesday, May 20, 2025, to 10 years of forced work by the DRC Constitutional Court.
The former Prime Minister is found guilty of crimes of diversion of public funds. The respondent would have diverted more than $ 245 million intended for public projects, including the agro-industrial park of Bukangalonzo.
Augustin Matata Ponyo is also prohibited from the exercise of a public service for at least 5 years. During this period, he could neither vote nor benefit from parole. Apart from the Prime Ministers, two other co-accused currently abroad received each, 5 years in prison.
After his conviction which is the culmination of a procedure which started in 2021, the former Prime Minister evokes his parliamentary immunity being deputy.
The public prosecutor’s office could, however, issue an arrest warrant in the coming hours, although the National Assembly has not been officially seized for immunity lifting.
