Central African Republic: the army orders a ceasefire to relaunch the peace process
The staff of the Central African Armed Forces (FACA) gave the order, this Tuesday, to all national units and their allies to rigorously respect a cease-fire, as part of the implementation of the reintegration agreement recently concluded with two still active armed groups.
According to an official press release, this measure aims to facilitate the return of the Unit for Peace in the Central African Republic (UPC) and the Return, Complaint and Rehabilitation Group (3R) in the Political Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in the Central African Republic (Appr-RCA), signed in February 2019.
Indeed, a complementary agreement was initialed on April 19 between the Central African government and the representatives of the two armed groups, paving the way for their reinstatement in the national peace process.
The FACA chief of staff, General Zéphirin Mamadou, demanded the immediate and unconditional application of the ceasefire by all the forces deployed on the territory, as well as by their partners. He also called to avoid any military action likely to compromise advances to peace.
In addition, he invited the 3R and UPC groups to identify as soon as possible the sites where their fighters will be confined and recorded, with a view to their disarmament and their supervision, in accordance with the terms of the agreement.
General Mamadou said that the ceasefire does not concern operations aimed at protecting civilian populations from groups considered to be opposed to any peace process.
