Benin: a relative of Soumaïla Yaya sentences a year in prison for extortion
The Court of Repression of Economic Offenses and Terrorism (CRIET) returned its verdict on January 27, 2025 in a case involving AA, presented as the brother-in-law of Soumaïla Yaya Alabi, Director General of the Republican Police (DGPR).
The latter was sentenced to 12 months in prison and a fine of one million CFA francs, in addition to the payment of 15,000 FCFA to his victim, a police officer in office at the Ekpè police station.
Initially continued for cybercrime and title usurpation, AA has finally seen the charges requalified in extortion. He would have exploited his proximity to the DGPR to pretend to be him via the Truecaller application, thus intimidating police officers and extracting money from them in exchange for supposed favors.
Despite his denials, the Ciet found him guilty and pronounced a more lenient sentence than that required by the public prosecutor, who asked for five years in prison, including two years firm.
