UN: Somalia requests the cessation of the manusom in the country

Somalia asks the United Nations to put an end to their political mission in the country, which helped the government to restore peace and stability in the face of attacks by the extremist group Al-Shabab, linked to Al-Qaida.

After more than ten years of the presence of the assistance mission of nations in Somalia (Manusom) in the country, Somalia officially asked the UN to end this political mission, whose mandate will end next October.

The Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi expressed this request in a letter to the Security Council. He stressed that this decision follows an in -depth examination of Somalia’s strategic priorities.

In his correspondence, the Minister praised the crucial role played by the UN mission in the promotion of peace, stability and development of the country. He nevertheless estimated that it was time to go to the next phase of the partnership between Somalia and the UN. The Minister also stressed that the lessons learned from the presence of the mission will continue to guide the efforts of the Somali government in the future.

The manusom was established in June 2013 by the Security Council to support the Somali authorities in their transition to democracy and the establishment of the rule of law, after more than two decades of conflicts involving clan militias, Islamist groups and criminal gangs.
