National team: Mamour Ndiaye, Patrick Vieira’s bet for the future September 21, 2026
At the age of 20, Mamour Ndiaye discovered La Tanière after a rise that took him from Dakar to Saint-Étienne, via the Norwegian first division. His first call-up to the A reflects Patrick Vieira’s choice to broaden the competition in goal, where Yehvann Diouf and Mory Diaw start with a head start on the two neo-Lions.
The name of Mamour Ndiaye is only beginning to establish itself in the landscape of Senegalese football. However, the young goalkeeper has already experienced several important steps in his progress. Born in Dakar on October 22, 2005, he took his first steps at the Oslo Football Academy, a structure which notably contributed to the training of Krépin Diatta. His potential quickly opened the doors to Norwegian football for him.
From Dakar to the Norwegian Premier League
In 2024, Mamour joined Sarpsborg 08, a partner club of his academy. After a few appearances with the reserves, he discovered the Eliteserien, the Norwegian first division. His baptism of fire is noticed since he keeps his clean sheet against Molde.
The following season allowed him to reach a new level. Installed as Sarpsborg’s number one goalkeeper, he accumulated playing time and notably reached the final of the Norwegian Cup in 2025. In total, AS Saint-Étienne indicates that he made 39 appearances in the Norwegian first division before his departure.
This experience at the high European level constitutes one of the main arguments which accompanied his transfer to Saint-Étienne. In July 2026, ASSE formalized his arrival until 2030. At 20 years old and with his 1.96 m, the goalkeeper joined the professional group with the status of understudy of Gautier Larsonneur. The Saint-Etienne club then presents its recruitment as that of a young goalkeeper who already has experience in the first division and is expected to continue his progression.
An international journey already well underway
Before discovering the A’s, Mamour Ndiaye had already taken the steps with the youth selections. African U20 champion with Senegal in 2023, he then participated in the World Cup in the category, where he started. His time with the U20s therefore allowed him to familiarize himself with the demands of international football.
His summons by Patrick Vieira, however, constitutes a change of dimension. The coach selected him among the 29 players called for the first meeting of the season, offering the young Stéphanois his first experience with the Lions A.
Vieira opens the competition
This first selection comes in a sector where the cards can be redistributed after the international retirement of Édouard Mendy. Yehvann Diouf and Mory Diaw have, on paper, a head start over the two newcomers, Mamour Ndiaye and Ngagne Demba Thiam, in particular because of their experience with the A selection.
But Vieira’s choice to call two guards who had until then been absent from the Lair also reflects his desire to broaden his field of observation. The coach therefore does not close the door to an evolution of the hierarchy. Competition will now have to be built through training, club performances and future call-ups.
For this guardian of the future, the immediate objective is therefore not necessarily to upset this hierarchy, but to seize the opportunity offered to him. His experience in Norway, his passage through the youth selections and his recent arrival in Saint-Étienne already give him some benchmarks to approach this new stage.
A place to win over time
In Saint-Étienne, the young Senegalese is still continuing his apprenticeship. The French club had recruited him with the idea of allowing him to progress alongside a more experienced goalkeeper. He has already made several appearances in preparation and with the reserve team since his arrival.
With the Lions, the challenge is different. Mamour Ndiaye discovers a group where competition is tougher and where international experience naturally weighs in the hierarchy. But his summons above all allows him to enter the radar of the new coach.
Through this choice, Patrick Vieira seems to want to broaden his options in a particularly exposed position. Yehvann Diouf and Mory Diaw remain a step ahead, but Mamour Ndiaye and Ngagne Demba Thiam now have a first window to find a place.
For the former U20 goalkeeper, this call-up constitutes above all a new step. After Dakar, Norway and Saint-Étienne, Mamour Ndiaye discovered La Tanière with the ambition of continuing a progression which, until now, had been made in stages.
