Guédiawaye: the prefect suspends the “Navetanes” after recurring violence
The National Popular Championship (CNP) competitions, better known as “Navetanes”, are suspended in the Guédiawaye department. The prefect, Ahmadou Coumba Ndiaye, signed an order to this effect the same day, registered under number 0027/D.GW/P.
The text, published this October 21, 2026, is unambiguous on the calendar. According to article 1, competitions are suspended “from October 21, 2026 and until further notice”. No deadline is therefore set for the resumption of the championship in this suburb of the capital.
Three reasons given
The prefectural authority justifies its decision with three complaints: “recurrence of scenes of violence and attacks before and after matches”, “destruction of public and private property” and “permanent threats of disturbances to public order”.
The order is based on the report of the central commissioner of Guédiawaye, dated the same day (n°01665/CCG/SP). The prefect also refers to “the need to preserve public order” and considers “the multiple complaints from citizens who are victims of violence before and after matches”.
A legal framework recalled
To base his decision, the State representative cites several texts: the Constitution, the Penal Code (articles 96 to 100), the law of 1972 on the organization of territorial and local administration, as well as the decree of May 29, 1972 relating to the responsibilities of heads of administrative districts. He also mentions the decree of August 7, 2024 appointing him as head of the department.
Article 2 charges the central commissioner of Guédiawaye with the execution of the decree, “which will be recorded, published and communicated wherever necessary”.
