The African Union (AU) has expressed concern over the ongoing clashes between armed forces and rebels in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, calling for an immediate end to the conflict and protection of civilians.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, made an urgent appeal for an end to the hostilities in Ethiopia’s Amhara region. The ongoing conflict has caused great concern within the AU, which fears the devastating humanitarian consequences of this situation.
President Mahamat stressed the urgency of ending the conflict and called on all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue with a view to reaching a peaceful solution. The AU’s appeal reflects the growing concerns of the international community, which also urges the search for a peaceful resolution and the provision of humanitarian assistance to the populations affected by the violence.

The conflict in the Amhara region has escalated in recent months, pitting Ethiopian national defense forces against Fano militia fighters. This unofficial militia, which had supported federal army soldiers during the civil war in the neighboring region of Tigray, has become a key player in the current conflict. The clashes not only heightened internal tensions, but also raised concerns about regional and humanitarian repercussions.
