DRC: towards the lifting of the immunity of Joseph Kabila
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, military justice asked the Senate to withdraw immunity from Joseph Kabila, former president of the DRC.
Joseph Kabila, suspected of being associated with the Congo river alliance, the political aspect of the M23, faces accusations of betrayal, war crimes, crimes against humanity and involvement in an insurrection.
On Wednesday, April 30, 2025, the Congolese justice minister announced that an indisputable quantity of evidence had been reunited. These files would demonstrate the participation of the former head of state in these crimes. However, as a former president, Joseph Kabila is a senator for life and benefits from immunity in this quality.
These accusations were disputed by Joseph Kabila’s party, suspended by the government.
The eyes are therefore turned towards the Senate which must decide on the lifting of this immunity which would actually authorize prosecution but would also grant justice to act on the heritage of Jospeh Kabila.
