A new life shattered by the loss of one’s home August 27, 2026
Some wrestlers left their mark on the arena with their exploits before reinventing themselves or retraining after their sporting career. Today, spotlight on Salif Diallo, alias Gambien, former wrestler from the “Boul Faalé” stable who became a security agent but whose new life is now disrupted by a land dispute.
Gambien, nicknamed the “Scorpion” of Boul Faalé, was one of the last representatives of the generation that gravitated around Tyson and Eumeu Sène. In his time, he had managed to find a place among the most promising prospects of the team.
Its story begins far from the large Dakar walls. It is in Gambia that the adventure takes shape. “The fight between Tyson and Mor Fadam, fought in Gambia on July 8, 2001, found me there. Afterwards, some members of my entourage told me that I was Senegalese and that I should return to pursue a career as a wrestler, a sport which was already a passion for me,” says the native of Tamba in eastern Senegal.
Still very young, Salif Diallo left Gambia for Dakar. Once in the capital, he approaches Yarakh beach, located not far from his home and very popular with wrestlers. He spends almost all his evenings there training and challenging those who come to practice there.
“Every night I found myself there and I beat almost everyone. Those who came, wrestlers and simple spectators, did not know my name and called me “Gambian Boy”. It was from there that they suggested that I call myself Gambian,” he explains.
The nickname will ultimately become his identity.
Sacre du Claf
But to reach the high level, he needed to join a real team. He thus joined “Boul Faalé”, a structure which was then one of the largest wrestling schools in the country, under the direction of Tyson.
For his first fight, Gambien goes to Casamance. Opposed to Pape Fall, he won. The fight, organized by the late promoter Serigne Modou Niang, constituted the first act of a career which would quickly gain momentum.
After this first victory, another challenge was offered to him: Nar Touré, son of the former champion Toubabou Dior. At the time, the latter enjoyed a solid reputation and was a formidable opponent.
“His lead had lingered at the Boul Faalé stable for days without anyone daring to confront him. I asked Eumeu Sène and Tyson to offer it to me. Those who fled him knew that he was a giant who had repeatedly won the tournaments known as “The 72 Hours of Mbaye Guèye”, he remembers.
Far from being intimidated, Gambien took up the challenge. On the day of the duel, he displays courage, bravery and temerity to dominate the son of Toubabou Dior.
This victory attracts the attention of Gaston Mbengue. The latter included it in the Strike Wrestling Championship (Claf), for the 2007-2008 edition. Gambien finds himself in a tough group, in the company of Nar Touré (again), Katy 2 and Bismi Ndoye. He had a remarkable run, winning his three fights and finishing at the top of his group.
But the best is yet to come. On January 4, 2009, at the Demba Diop stadium, Gambien played the Claf final against Ness de Lansar. He wins and wins the trophy.
This victory above all confirms his status as the great hope of “Boul Faalé” and reinforces his image as a difficult wrestler to maneuver. His remake against Nar Touré is still remembered.
Indeed, during their confrontation, while Toubabou Dior’s son was in difficulty, his brother intervened to try to get him out of Gambien’s grip. An episode which illustrates the intensity of the fights of this era and the temperament of the young wrestler.
After his coronation at Claf, Gambien gradually became one of the main elements of “Boul Faalé”. Alongside Tyson and Eumeu Sène, he helps maintain the torch of the team.
But the rise will come to a serious halt. On March 6, 2010, at the Demba Diop stadium, he faced Khadim Ndiaye 2, nicknamed the “Bulldozer of Thiaroye-sur-Mer”. This time, Scorpio falls. A setback that still sticks in his throat.
A new life shattered
“This defeat is the most bitter of my career. I should not have lost this fight,” he regrets.
After this poor performance, his career entered a zone of turbulence. Fights become rare and Gambien goes through a blank season in 2010-2011.
Added to this are the tensions that shake “Boul Faalé”; when relations between Tyson and Eumeu Sène begin to deteriorate. Gambien thus finds himself faced with a dilemma.
Very attached to his two mentors, he even considered leaving the stable if the crisis persisted. For him, “Boul Faalé” went beyond the simple framework of a wrestling school and was a family to which he was deeply attached.
After more than two years without any real competition, he finally got an opportunity to relaunch his career. Promoter Aziz Ndiaye offered him a fight against Baye Peulh of Rock Énergie, on May 1, 2013.
But for his big comeback, the “Scorpion” fails to regain the full extent of his potential. Baye Peulh wins and plunges Gambien even further into doubt.
However, he managed to raise his head. On April 19, 2015, in Kaolack, he dominated King Kong. This victory allows him to return to success, even if it is not enough to sustainably relaunch his career.
On January 3, 2016, he bowed to Bébé Saloum.
In the meantime, “Boul Faalé” has lost a large part of its residents. Eumeu Sène and several other wrestlers took another direction. Valdo and Gambien are then among those who remain attached to the team’s philosophy.
For several years, Gambien has gradually moved away from the spotlight. He retrained in security. He settled in particular in Nguékhokh, where he worked as a security agent alongside the mayor of the locality.
Gambien then thought he had definitively turned the page on the arena and built a new life. But his daily life will be disrupted by a land mishap which causes him to lose a large part of his savings.
“In Nguékhokh, I took all my savings to buy land. I had built a house there and was staying there. But one day, someone showed up to say that the site belonged to him and had legal documents to recover my property,” he confides, very affected.
This mishap deeply saddened him. After devoting a large part of his youth to wrestling, he thought he could turn the page permanently and build a more stable existence.
But the loss of his house plunges him back into uncertainty. And it was precisely during this difficult period that the idea of a return to the arena germinated in his head.
A certain Yamou Sarr, living in Mbour, intends to play a role in this return. “We have decided that Gambien makes his return to the arena. The fact that he lost his house hurts us. We want to support him and find a fight for him to come back,” he says.
More than ten years from his last great days, the “Scorpion” therefore dreams of a new life in wrestling. Gambien obviously knows that time has passed and that the arena has profoundly changed.
But he keeps one conviction intact: never back down from a challenge. The “Scorpion” perhaps no longer has the same fangs as in the time of its splendor. But he still hopes to be able to sting one last time.
