The National Assembly opens several projects August 11, 2026

The deputies, meeting in an extraordinary parliamentary session, committed, Monday, August 10, 2026, to examining a series of bills relating to the Labor Code, social security and the protection of critical information infrastructures. They will also examine, in emergency procedure, the proposed laws relating to the declaration of assets and the supervision of special credits and other secret funds. This fifteen-day session should allow the adoption of resolutions creating six parliamentary commissions of inquiry.

The first extraordinary session of the year 2026 was opened on Monday August 10, 2026, at the National Assembly. The president of the institution, Ousmane Sonko, after noting that the quorum was reached with the presence of 100 deputies, indicated that the National Assembly was ready to deliberate. He informed that the National Assembly will study three bills relating to the Labor Code, the Social Security Code and the protection of critical information infrastructures and the proposed laws amending Article 37 of the Constitution relating to the declaration of assets and another proposed law relating to the supervision of special credits and other secret funds.

The National Assembly adopted resolutions creating six parliamentary commissions of inquiry relating, among other things, to the transfer of buildings, the use by the government of financial mechanisms such as Total return swap (Trs) and the alleged irregularities in the award and execution of contracts for the “One student, one computer” program, among others. Ousmane Sonko, after adjourning the session, asked the Conference of Presidents to meet to define the timetable for the work in committee and for the holding of the plenary.

MP Thierno Alassane Sall described Pastef’s initiative concerning the proposed laws on the declaration of assets and the supervision of special funds as a “diversion” of the parliamentary majority. “Hearings on the sequence leading to the death of Abdoulaye Bâ would have been more relevant. The National Assembly tries to claim transparency, but it is slow to shed light on a certain number of matters linked to the budget of the National Assembly which was never voted on,” declared Thierno Alassane Sall. The non-registered deputy indicated that the National Assembly is not yet in a position to shed light on the salary of the president of the parliamentary institution as well as the political funds made available to him and the recruitment of members of his office.

MP Amadou Ba (Pastef) welcomed this opening which, according to him, reflects the National Assembly’s desire for transparency in the management of public funds. “Regarding the declaration of assets of the President of the Republic, it was he himself who expressed the wish. He has already submitted his declaration to Ofnac and the Constitutional Council. However, the current text on the declaration of assets did not explicitly govern the presidential function. This involves adapting the legal framework. It is not a question of political calculation, but a moral commitment and a promise included in our program,” declared the member of the parliamentary majority.
