Somalia: 70 members of Al-Shabab killed

The Somali government has announced that 70 members of the Al-Shabab rebel movement were killed and 30 others injured during a military operation in the Mudug region, in the north of the country.

A military operation carried out in the Mudug region, north of Somalia, led to the death of 70 members of the Rebelle Al-Shabab movement, according to a statement published by the Ministry of Information. The operation focused on the locality of Tabar-Moge, located about 28 kilometers north of Harardhere, a coastal city recently taken up by government forces.

The Ministry of Information specified that this operation, led by the Somali National Army in collaboration with its international partners, was successful with its aim of neutralizing the terrorist elements active in the region. This victory represents a blow for Al-Shabab, an Islamist rebel group affiliated with Al-Qaeda, which has been raging in Somalia for years, sowing terror across the country.

Somalia, plagued by chronic insecurity problems, has been fighting for years against attacks perpetrated by Al-Shabab and other terrorist groups, including those affiliated with Daesh. Since 2007, Al-Shabab has led guerrilla warfare against the Somali government and the Mission of the African Union in Somalia, seeking to overthrow the regime in place and to establish a radical Islamic State.
