Prison policy: 984 convicts pardoned by the President of the Republic

A total of 984 condemned prisoners benefited from the exceptional pardon of the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The announcement was made Tuesday by the Ministry of Justice through a press release.

By decrees signed on September 21, 2026, the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, granted an exceptional pardon to 984 convicts. According to a press release from the Ministry of Justice made public on Tuesday, this measure concerns in particular a total remission of sentences for 921 convicts outside categories.

Of this overall figure, 21 seriously ill prisoners benefited from a total remission of their sentences on the advice of the head doctor of the Prison Administration, as well as 19 minor prisoners and one prisoner aged over 65.

For the prisoners who found themselves with a partial remission of their sentence, there are 18 of them. There are four condemned to benefit from a commutation of the sentence of criminal life imprisonment.

“This measure is part of the prison policy conducted by the Head of State, aimed at improving detention conditions, reducing the prison population and the social reintegration of pardoned people,” recalls the text.
