Onion production: import freeze officially lifted

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce announced on Monday the official lifting of the freeze on onion imports, in force since January 16, 2026.

In a press release, the ministerial department headed by Serigne Guèye Diop indicates that this decision comes at the end of a period of regulation which made it possible to favor the flow of national production and to protect the outlets of small local producers.

The lifting of the freeze is motivated by “the evolution of local availability”, according to the ministry, which specifies that the objective is to guarantee a regular and adequate supply of the internal market, while contributing to price stability for consumers.

To this end, the ministry invites the importers concerned to contact the Market Regulation Agency (ARM) and to take the necessary measures to facilitate the implementation of this measure.

It calls on all players in the value chain to demonstrate professionalism and responsibility in order to ensure compliance with the provisions relating to the lifting of the freeze.

The measure to freeze onion imports was introduced on January 16, 2026 as part of market regulation and the protection of local production.
