Morocco reaches AES for access to the Atlantic
Morocco proposed to the Alliance of the States of the Sahel (AES) a strategic project aimed at opening Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. The three countries, gathered within this alliance, officially supported the initiative.
In search of new commercial routes after their removal from ECOWAS, Sahelian states could now access Moroccan port infrastructures on the Atlantic Ocean. A major advance made possible thanks to a proposal from King Mohammed VI, which received Monday, April 28, 2025 the foreign ministers from the three countries.
According to the Maghreb Arab Press (MAP) agency, the Sahelian diplomats praised the initiative of the sovereign, stressing their “total membership” to the project and their desire to accelerate its realization. During this hearing, the ministers also presented the state of institutional and operational advancement of the AES, created to strengthen cooperation between its members.
This Moroccan offer represents a turning point in regional relations, while the Sahel Alliance seeks to free itself from its geographic isolation, in a context of persistent tensions with Algeria.
