Kenya: nearly 4,000 families moved by floods
About 4,000 families were moved by the floods in Kenya, Raymond Omollo, principal secretary at the Ministry of the Interior and the National Administration on Tuesday. The majority of affected families are found in the west of the country, especially in Busia and Kisumu counties, harshly struck by the heavy rains of last week.
“The overflows of the Nzoia, Nyando, Yala, Miriu and Awach rivers have led to the movement of 3,970 families”said Omollo in a statement published in Nairobi. To respond to this long -term crisis, he added that the government plans to revive communities at risk in more residents and create buffer zones of 30 meters along the rivers and large expanses of water, in order to limit future trips.
Currently, disaster victims are hosted in camps installed in schools, while persistent rains throughout the country. The Center for Forecast and Applications (ICPAC) of the Intergovernmental Climate Authority for Development (IGAD) had already alerted in November to normal shipments in eight countries of the Horn of Africa, including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Somalia, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
According to the ICPAC, some regions affected in Kenya may receive between 50 and 200 mm of rain per day. Residents of high -risk areas are therefore called upon to redouble vigilance. In 2023, the floods in the horn of Africa caused the death of 270 people and moved more than 900,000 individuals, recalls the report of the ICPAC.
