The French Ministry of the Armed Forces recently announced its intention to order 130 additional armored vehicles to replace the AMX-10 light tanks and the armored forward vehicles (VAB) ceded to Ukraine. This decision is part of the military programming bill (LPM) 2024-2030 and aims to strengthen the country’s defense capacity.

The French government is continuing its efforts to modernize and strengthen its military capabilities. As part of the LPM 2024-2030, the Ministry of the Armed Forces presented an amendment providing for the acquisition of 130 new armored vehicles to replace the old AMX-10s and VABs sold to Ukraine. This decision aims to maintain a high level of technology and operational power within the French armed forces.

Among the 130 tanks ordered, 38 will be Jaguars, armored reconnaissance and combat vehicles equipped with a 40 mm gun. This acquisition will enable the French army to improve its capabilities in terms of reconnaissance and rapid reaction on the ground. The other 92 armored vehicles will be Griffons, multi-role armored vehicles that will be deployed for various missions, including troop transport.

238 Jaguars by 2030

According to the government, these new acquisitions will bring the total number of Jaguars to 238 by 2030, an increase of 38 units compared to the initial version of the bill. Likewise, the number of Griffons will reach 1437, an increase of 92 units compared to the initial forecast. By the end of 2023, the French army plans to have 60 Jaguars and 575 Griffons.

It is important to emphasize that the government will finance this acquisition outside the budgetary resources of the LPM. This approach was chosen in order not to compromise the format of the armies and to guarantee that the French forces have modern and efficient equipment. By ceding older equipment to Ukraine, France is also strengthening its cooperation with this country in the field of defence.
