Egypt: Joseph Aoun exchanges with his counterpart Abdel Fattah El-Sissi
Monday, May 19, 2025, Lebanese president Joseph Aoun went to Egypt where he was received in Cairo by his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah El-Sissi, as part of an official visit.
This visit to strengthen relations between Lebanon and the Arab countries, after several years of diplomatic tensions, marks an important stage for the new Lebanese president and his government, which seek to restore solid links with the Arab world, in particular with the Gulf countries.
Let him remember that relations have gradually deteriorated between these different countries due to the growing influence of Hezbollah, armed group and political party supported by Iran.
During a joint statement at the end of the exchanges, the Egyptian president said that Cairo continued his diplomatic efforts to put pressure on Israel so that he is completely and unanswered from the Lebanese territory, in accordance with resolution 1701 of the UN Security Council, adopted after the 2006 war.
“Egypt is continuing its intensive efforts and contacts with various regional and international parties to push Israel to an immediate and unconditional withdrawal from the whole Lebanese territory, and to the complete and simultaneous implementation of resolution 1701.”he says.
For his part, President Joseph Aoun reiterated his country’s commitment to comply with the same resolution which notably calls for the disarmament of all the armed groups present in the country, including Hezbollah.
Recall that the official visit of the Lebanese president in Cairo is the manifestation of a desire displayed supported by a series of diplomatic approaches undertaken by the new Lebanese power to get the country out of its regional isolation and restore the confidence of its Arab partners.
