Senegal will host a historic moment: the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, from October 31 to November 13, 2026. For the first time in the history of the Olympic movement, an Olympic sporting event will be organized on the African continent. Why is this choice so symbolic?

More than a century of waiting

For more than a hundred years, the Olympic Games have traveled to Europe, Asia, America and Oceania. Africa, despite its immense sporting wealth, had not yet hosted an Olympic sporting event. Yet the continent has seen the birth of generations of champions: athletic legends, football stars, world-famous basketball players and many other talents. The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games therefore mark a historic turning point, not only for Senegal, but for all of Africa.

Why Senegal?

The choice of Senegal is part of a broader ambition: to make the Youth Olympic Games an event focused on youth, education, inclusion, cultural exchanges and sustainable development. In Senegal, sport occupies an important place in daily life, particularly among young people. Dakar 2026 thus intends to use sport as a vector of dialogue, social cohesion and inspiration for African youth.

Dakar, a capital turned towards the ocean and the world

Located in the far west of the African continent, Dakar is a city open to the Atlantic.

The political and cultural capital of Senegal, it is renowned for its hospitality, its artistic scene, its music, its gastronomy and its historical heritage. The city also gave its name to the famous Dakar Rally.

With Dakar 2026, Senegal will become the first African country to host an Olympic sporting event. The competitions will also take place in Diamniadio and Saly, two sites which will fully participate in this great sports festival.

Much more than medals

The Youth Olympic Games are not limited to sporting performance. The Dakar 2026 project focuses on heritage, education, sustainability and participation of local communities. The objective is to leave a lasting legacy, both material and human, which can benefit local communities and youth well beyond the Games.

An Africa with multiple talents

Reducing African sport to football or long-distance running would be a mistake. The continent also excels in basketball, traditional wrestling, surfing, cycling, skateboarding and many other growing disciplines.

Dakar 2026 will offer a showcase for this diversity, with 25 competitive sports and 10 commitment sports. The world will discover an Africa that is creative, ambitious and driven by its youth.

The countdown is on

For young athletes, Dakar 2026 represents a dream.

For Senegal, this is a historic responsibility.

For Africa, this is a major milestone in the history of the Olympic movement.

And for each of us, it is an invitation to discover another image of Africa: young, passionate, welcoming and focused on the future.
