Cinema: “Memory on the Move” looks back on the years of citizen mobilization

Kansala Media Group (KMG) unveiled, on Saturday September 5, 2026, the trailer for “Mémoire en marche”, a documentary film dedicated to the political and civic memory of Senegal between 2021 and 2024. Directed by Aliou Sané, in co-production with Ndèye Marame Guèye, the film also questions, in 2026, the legacy of this period and the hopes born from the alternation.

The years 2021 to 2024 constitute the common thread of this 90-minute documentary. A period marked by demonstrations, citizen mobilizations, resistance and democratic demands. Through the testimonies of those who experienced these events, “Memory on the Move” intends to preserve the trace of a particularly eventful sequence in the recent history of Senegal.

Presented as a “duty to remember”, the film looks back on the struggles and upheavals that crossed the country. “A generation stood up, marched, resisted, demanded its democracy and its justice, sometimes at the cost of its freedom, its integrity and its life,” underlines the synopsis.

But the documentary is not limited to a look back at the past. It establishes a link with the present and questions the consequences of this period. “Memory on the Move brings this memory into dialogue with the present and questions what remains of the battles that crossed the country,” indicates the press release.

Democracy, justice, responsibility, dead, injured, tortured and former political detainees are among the themes covered. The film thus poses several questions about the post-alternation period: “What is the price of democracy? What remains of the fight when those who were in the streets are in power? »

Through these questions, the authors wish to confront the memory of the struggles with the realities of Senegal in 2026. The documentary questions in particular the capacity to build “a new democracy on the silences and impunities of yesterday”.

Produced in Senegal by Kansala Media Group, “Mémoire en marche” is produced in French, Wolof and Diola, with French subtitles. The film, in DCP format and 16:9 image, is carried by a technical team including directors of photography Malick Hamady Diallo and Amadou Baba Diallo, sound engineer Latyr Ndoye and composer of the original music Kya Loum.

With the subtitle “A nation – A story – A story”, “Memory on the move” thus presents itself as an attempt to preserve the voices and testimonies of a recent period, while opening the debate on its heritage. An approach summarized in the question which closes the synopsis: “did the revolution really take place? »
