Cameroon: Paul Biya carries out an urgent reshuffle within the army
Through a decree dated August 30, 2023, President Paul Biya made appointments within the central administrative unit of the Ministry of Defense.
While on August 30, 2023, putschist soldiers who “put an end to the regime in place” in Gabon on Wednesday, dismissing the outgoing president Ali Bongo Ondimba, the Cameroonian president signed and published, this same Wednesday, August 30, a decree appointing of officials in the army. The appointments concern positions within structures placed under the authority of the Minister Delegate to the Presidency in charge of Defense, the central secretariat, and the general staffs.
Among the positions affected are those of general controllers of the armies and general inspectors. By appointing competent and experienced officials, the nonagenarian president aims to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities and respond to current security challenges.

While President Ali Bongo, in power for 14 years, was preparing to be re-elected for a third term, soldiers spoke on television and declared that they were putting an “end to the regime in place”. General Brice Oligui Nguema, head of the presidential guard and leader of the putschists, was chosen to be the “president of the transition”.
Ali Bongo was placed under house arrest with his family and doctors. A series of arrests also targeted one of his sons and six other senior regime officials.
