A man steeped in faith, rigorous and committed to his community January 19, 2026
Seydina Mouhamadou Lamine Laye, seventh General Caliph of the Layène brotherhood, has held this high office for less than a year. Guardian of the founding values of the brotherhood, a man steeped in faith, he is part of the continuity of the Mahdi’s message, with a demand for rigor and discernment.
He is the devoted and uncompromising guardian of the virtues attached to the Sufi brotherhood founded around 1883 by Seydina Mouhammadou Limamou Laye.
A man of God with an inspiring nobility of spirit, Seydina Mouhamadou Lamine Laye is the 7th Caliph General of Imâm Mahdi. He inherited the highest office of this community following the death of Seydina Mouhamadou Mahtar Laye on April 9, 2025. His mission: to perpetuate the spiritual values and teachings of the Mahdi, to maintain social cohesion and peace among the faithful.
A perfect model of righteousness and dedication, he is described as a man steeped in faith, rigorous and committed to the community. This was built around the values of peace, unity and devotion, guided by the wisdom of their spiritual leaders. Recognized for her intellectual rigor and great discretion, Seydina Mouhamadou Lamine Laye commands respect and does not compromise on principles.
Considered a man of dialogue, cultivated, unifying and respectful of the orthodoxy of the brotherhood, the religious guide was already in the hearts before his caliphate for having been spokesperson for his predecessors for several years. In 2009, after the death of Chérif Ousseynou Laye, he was called upon to succeed him as spokesperson for the Khalifat, embodying with dignity the voice that relays the messages and directions of the moment. He then assumed this same responsibility following Seydina Abdoulaye Thiaw Laye’s call to God, continuing with constancy and serenity the mission entrusted to him.
Throughout the magisterium of Seydina Mouhamadou Makhtar Laye, sixth Caliph general of the community, he carried the torch of speech with loyalty and precision, weaving a lasting link between spiritual leadership and the community of the faithful. A gift of speech A religious man with a vast general Islamic culture, the current caliph distinguished himself with sharp rhetoric. Which immediately captures the attention of its audience. His gift of speech and his ability to clarify the most complex concepts have raised him to the rank of experienced speaker.
Under the caliphate of Seydina Mame Alassane Laye, he established himself as a voice of authority. His words carried weight as much by the depth of the argument as by the clarity of his delivery. On several occasions, the latter mandated him to direct and host conferences and religious programs, thus placing him at the heart of the spiritual and educational dynamics of the community.
As part of the promotion and popularization of his grandfather’s message, he also launched a series of audio cassettes in which he delivered profound religious talks, aimed at propagating the prophetic missions of Seydina Limamou Lahi and Seydina Issa Rouhou Lahi. This initiative enjoyed great popular success and helped to increase its notoriety within the Islamic community and the Layènes, in particular.
A spiritual force
Born in 1958 in Yoff, Seydina Mouhamadou Lamine Laye is the son of Seydina Ababacar Laye and Sokhna Fatou Lô Diop. He is heir to a noble lineage. He is part of the first generation of grandsons of Imâm Mahdi. His father, third son of Seydina Limamou Laye Al Mahdi, was called to God in 1966. A difficult ordeal in his early childhood. But, he counts on the comforting presence of his mother, whose love was deep and immeasurable. With her, he shared a singular bond. A close relationship.
She will thus be his protector and watches over him with constant tenderness and unwavering wisdom. Like any child from a religious family, he began with Koranic studies. He then embraced the French school. At the beginning of the 1980s, driven by the quest for knowledge, he flew to Morocco to perfect his religious and intellectual knowledge.
Today, the spiritual guide of the Layènes embodies much more than a name or a lineage. It symbolizes renewed hope, a spiritual force called to guide consciences towards peace, dignity and transcendence.
Under his Khalifat, the future is taking shape in the continuity of the message of Seydina Limamou Laye, a message of universal peace, unity between souls and social justice based on divine fraternity.
