Diplomacy: Jean-Noël Barrot on an official visit to Algiers to relaunch Franco-Algerian cooperation

The French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, arrived in Algiers on Sunday for an official visit aimed at eating diplomatic tensions and reviving cooperation between France and Algeria.

During a press conference after his meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Mr. Barrot said that the two countries had granted themselves to reactivate all cooperation mechanisms in various fields. He cited the words of President Tebboune: “The curtain rises. »»

In terms of security, Mr. Barrot confirmed the resumption of intelligence exchanges and spoke of the possibility of a strategic dialogue on the situation in the Sahel region. Regarding migration, the two parties decided to immediately relaunch their cooperation. Mr. Barrot said that questions related to readmissions and visas are addressed within the framework of the usual consular dialogues, allowing fluid cooperation.

“We have also agreed to work on the content of the agreements governing our mobility and migration relationships, and to identify the necessary improvements to make them more effective”he added.

Economic relations should also be reactivated. Mr. Barrot stressed that Mr. Tebboune had made a commitment to boost trade, in particular in the agrifood, automotive and sea sectors.

This is the first visit to a senior French diplomatic official in Algeria since the degradation of bilateral relations, fueled by differences on migration issues, historical issues, as well as the position of France on the file of Western Sahara.
