Tamba: Media mobilized against disinformation and violent extremism
More than 40 journalists and influencers from the departments of Tambacounda, Goudiry and Koumpentoum are participating, from October 26 to 28, in a training workshop organized by Timbuktu Institute as part of the SENRésilience II project.
Faced with the risks linked to disinformation and violent extremism, Timbuktu Institute is focusing on strengthening the capacities of media professionals and social network actors. Launched this Monday, October 26 in Tambacounda, this three-day training aims to consolidate their contribution to preventing tensions and strengthening community resilience.
“This training (…) aims to strengthen the capacity of media actors, media organizations, including influencers and actors who are very active today on social networks,” explains the president of Timbuktu Institute, Bakary Sambe.
More than 16 sessions are planned around themes such as the processing of sensitive information, conflict-sensitive journalism, information warfare, the dynamics of violent extremism and journalistic ethics.
Through this initiative, the organizers also wish to strengthen relations between the media, the authorities and the defense and security forces. The challenge is to promote access to reliable and verified information in order to slow the spread of false news and prevent sensitive content from fueling social tensions.
At the end of the workshop, Timbuktu Institute hopes to consolidate a lasting partnership with media actors in the eastern region and strengthen their commitment to human security and social cohesion.
