From Léopold Senghor to Bassirou Diomaye: The age of power in Senegal
From Léopold Sédar Senghor to Bassirou Diomaye Faye, five men with different backgrounds have led Senegal. At 44 years old, the current head of state is the youngest President in the history of Senegal, while Abdoulaye Wade is the oldest, at 73 years old.
The average age of accession to power in Senegal is around 55 years. But this average is not homogeneous. Two presidents reached the supreme office before the age of 46, two others around the age of fifty, while only one achieved his presidential ambition at the age of 73.
Léopold Sédar Senghor
Born October 9, 1906 in Joal, Léopold Sédar Senghor became president in September 1960. He was then 53 years old. Poet, grammar teacher, Senghor came to power with proven experience of public life. His career was built before independence, notably within French political institutions, then in the responsibilities exercised in Senegal. He embodies a generation of leaders whose trajectory was forged in the struggles that accompanied decolonization. He was the first president of independent Senegal and remained at the head of the country until his resignation on December 31, 1980.
Abdou Diouf

Born September 7, 1935 in Louga, Abdou Diouf became president on January 1, 1981, following the resignation of Senghor. He was then 45 years old. A senior civil servant by training, he was notably chief of staff to President Senghor, secretary general of the presidency, minister, then Prime Minister from 1970. This progression allowed him to accumulate significant experience of the state apparatus even before reaching the highest office. He will remain president until April 2000.
Me Abdoulaye Wade

Born May 29, 1926, he became president on April 1, 2000, at the age of 73. A lawyer by training, his accession to the presidency shows that the top of the State sometimes requires self-sacrifice and determination. At 73, Wade becomes the oldest president upon taking office among Senegal’s five heads of state. The arrival of Me Abdoulaye Wade to power also symbolizes a new institutional sequence, after nearly four decades of socialist presidency (Diouf and Senghor).
Macky Sall

Born December 11, 1961 in Fatick, Macky Sall became president on April 2, 2012, at the age of 50. A geological engineer by training, he held several government responsibilities, including several times as minister, before becoming Prime Minister from 2004 to 2007 and President of the National Assembly in 2007. At 50, Macky Sall therefore came to power with already established experience of institutions and the exercise of public responsibilities. His journey symbolizes a tough apprenticeship within the state apparatus.
Bassirou Diomaye Faye

Born on March 25, 1980, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye was sworn in on April 2, 2024, at the age of 44. He becomes the fifth president of the Republic of Senegal and the youngest to hold this office since independence. Inspector of Taxes and Training Areas, he embodies generational renewal at the top of the State. His election thus opens a new sequence in Senegalese political history, that of a president who came to power before the age of 45. At 44, he is well below the average age of accession to power of his four predecessors.
