Heavy rain in Kaolack: damaged roads, puddles and difficult traffic
After the heavy rains recorded on Sunday, several districts of Kaolack are facing traffic difficulties.
Degraded roads, potholes filled with water and stagnant rainwater complicate people’s daily lives. The day after the rains, the scenery is striking in the capital of Saloum. Between the Nioro garage and the Chamber of Commerce, motorists struggle to make their way. Stagnant water, mixed with mud, makes circulation particularly difficult.
The situation is similar around the central market, where taxis cross puddles of blackish water which cover the road in places.
In Khakhoume, water invaded some concessions. Young people from the neighborhood mobilized, armed with shovels and tools, to dig passages and facilitate the flow. In Medina Mbaba, the situation was brought under control thanks to the motor pumps made available to the neighborhood.
Severely degraded roads
In the Ngane district, as in the city center, several roads show signs of serious degradation. Humidity and the repeated passage of large aircraft have further weakened certain sections. But it is mainly stagnant water that worries populations. “Their proximity to homes represents a real public health danger,” warns a resident of Thioffack.
In Thioffack, Sara, Médina Mbaba and Sam, motor pumps were recently granted by the Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy, Amy Mara Diéye, to strengthen water evacuation. “We thank the minister, but we cannot always count on goodwill. The municipality must fully play its role,” underlines Oumar Sarr, resident of Thioffack.
