Obituary: the caliph of the family of Tafsir Maba Diakhou Ba has passed away
The caliph of the Ba family of Nioro du Rip, El Hadji Mamour Ndiogou Ba, died early this morning in Dakar, following a long illness. He was 96 years old.
Born in 1930 in Nioro du Rip, El Hadji Mamour Ndiogou Ba was the son of Ndiogou Cira Marame Ba, himself younger son of Tafsir Maba Diakhou Ba (1809-1867), historical figure of Rip and Saloum.
His disappearance plunges Nioro du Rip into mourning, just like the royal family of Sine. The deceased was in fact linked to the latter through his wife, Ndèye Fatou Diouf, descendant of the royal family of Diakhao Sine.
El Hadji Mamour Ndiogou Ba acceded to the caliphate following the death of his older brother, El Hadji Babacar Ndiogou Ba, in February 2024. Previously, he had served as family spokesperson for around ten years.
A former player in the education system, he notably served as general supervisor at the Blaise Diagne high school in Dakar. Recognized for his oratory talent, his knowledge of the history of Rip and Saloum as well as his mastery of his family’s traditions, he had built a reputation as a man of dialogue and transmission.
Described as a man of easy commerce and great generosity, El Hadji Mamour Ndiogou Ba was renowned for his accessibility. In recent years, he had chosen to live mainly in Nioro du Rip, where he will be buried Thursday afternoon.
The editorial staff of Le Soleil presents its sincere condolences to the grieving family, the loved ones of the deceased as well as the people of Nioro du Rip.
