Amadou Makhtar Mbow: The notable dates of a rich career
This September 24 marks the second anniversary of the disappearance of Amadou Makhtar Mbow. A look back at the dates which shaped the destiny of this figure who belongs to this restricted pantheon of African personalities who have headed UNESCO.
1921- Birth
Born in Dakar on November 20, 1921. Amadou Makhtar Mbow is a historian by training, he became interested very early in questions of education, culture and development, which will remain at the heart of his career.
1940-1945- Mobilized during the Second World War
He was mobilized during the Second World War. This experience helps to shape his political awareness and his view on the relationships between Africa, Europe and the world.
1960 – First public responsibilities
With Senegal’s accession to independence, Amadou Makhtar Mbow participated in the construction of the new state and exercised several public responsibilities.
1970 – Entry into UNESCO
His expertise in the fields of education and culture leads him to exercise responsibilities within UNESCO.
1974 – First African to head UNESCO
Amadou Makhtar Mbow is elected Director General of UNESCO, becoming the first African to hold this position. He was reappointed in 1980 for a second term.
2008 – The National Conference of Senegal
The different components of the opposition and civil society entrusted him with the presidency of the National Conference of Senegal.
2023 – The disappearance of a witness to history
On September 24, 2023, Amadou Makhtar Mbow died in Dakar, at the age of 102.
