Camp Daara 2026: AEEMS pleads for responsible and ethical use of digital technology
The Association of Muslim Pupils and Students of Senegal (Aeems) called for more responsible use of social networks, on the occasion of the Day of Citizenship and Excellence organized as part of Camp Daara 2026 in Saint-Louis.
“Rethinking the use of digital technology: a step towards a moral overhaul of social networks”, This is the theme chosen by the Association of Muslim Pupils and Students of Senegal (Aeems) for its Day of Citizenship and Excellence marked by a hike and organized as part of Camp Daara 2026, which takes place from September 5 to 13 in Saint-Louis. Through this initiative, the association intends to raise particular awareness among young people of the issues related to the use of digital platforms. In the speech read by Ibrahima Diallo, head of the Citizen Education Department of AEEMS, the organization notes that social networks now occupy a central place in the lives of pupils and students.
According to the speaker, these platforms have profoundly transformed the modes of information, communication and social interaction. But their use is also accompanied by numerous abuses. “The observation is general and unfortunate: the downside of the use of digital platforms has largely outweighed their usefulness,” he declared. The Aeems denounces in particular hate speech, verbal violence, insults, cyberharassment, the dissemination of false information and obscene content, as well as attacks on privacy. These practices, the association believes, contribute to weakening the values of respect, responsibility, discretion and modesty. Speech targeting individuals or groups because of their ethnic, regional or political affiliation can also threaten social cohesion and national stability. However, Aeems does not deny the opportunities offered by digital technology.
She recognizes social networks as having “significant educational and spiritual potential” and instead pleads for a change in behavior. “This is why we are campaigning for the establishment of a framework of action and regulation in favor of an ethical cyberspace,” underlined Ibrahima Diallo. For the association, this refoundation requires mobilization of the State, families, schools, social actors and youth. The latter is called upon to develop true digital self-discipline. Parents must strengthen the transmission of values, while schools are invited to promote digital citizenship.
The Association finally calls on the State to ensure effective legal regulation of platforms, while reconciling the fight against digital abuse with the protection of freedom of expression and fundamental rights. Beyond raising awareness on social networks, this Day of Citizenship and Excellence is part of the vocation of Camp Daara 2026: to offer young people a framework for education, training and transmission of values. Through the various activities of the camp, the AEEMS intends to contribute to the training of Muslim youth aware of their responsibilities, attached to excellence and committed to the construction of a more responsible and united Senegalese society.
