Kaolack: those affected by Sing-Sing demand the restitution of their land

The Collective of those impacted by Sing-Sing organized a march in Kaolack on Monday to demand the return of their land and the definitive settlement of the land dispute between them and the municipality. At the end of the demonstration, a memorandum was submitted to the prefecture.

Bringing together nearly 450 members, the collective denounces a subdivision project that it considers illegal and carried out without consultation with the populations. “Hundreds of families are deprived of legally acquired land. The town hall wants to strip us of it through a housing development which hides its true ambitions,” declared its president, Elisabeth Bassène.

The protesters also denounce the amount of 500,000 CFA francs set, according to them, for the subdivision costs. An amount that they consider inaccessible for families with modest incomes. They also claim that several homes have been demolished without any alternative housing and regret the lack of progress despite the numerous steps taken. Ms. Bassène recalls that the mayor of Kaolack had promised to regularize the situation and invites him to honor this commitment.

For his part, Mayor Serigne Mboup maintains that the site concerned is not intended for housing but for urban development, specifying that the municipality acts in compliance with administrative and land procedures. Explanations rejected by the collective, which claims to not pursue any political objective and is only demanding the restitution of its land. Those affected are therefore calling on the highest authorities of the State to intervene to put an end to this land dispute.
