This is Levy Mwanawasa, also known as Zambia’s “best President” and also widely referred to as one of Zambia’s “foremost legal minds”.
He was President after being handpicked from slumber at the stroke of the midnight hour in 2001. Perhaps President Chiluba’s biggest mistake.
In a deal with Vedanta over KCM, Mwanawasa decided to instead hand the power of arbitration to South African courts in case of disputes. What of the competent Zambian Courts?
What Mwanawasa did is tantamount to treason and he should be tried posthumously and have his immunity stripped. We are fighting to get the mineral wealth that belongs to Zambians, and a court in SA should tell us what to do? ridiculous. But all this is because of Levy’s poor and rigid pattern of thought. A mine with a market capitalization of over $600 million at the time was instead sold for $25 million.
There are those who live in denial and say do not speak of the dead. How can we not speak of the dead when they left so much misery?
Mwanawasa’s terrible record as President should be interrogated because the the office he occupied was not a personal one but public.
