WhatsApp: modifying a message after sending, it is now possible

WhatsApp finally offers the possibility of correcting spelling mistakes and/or of reformulating your thoughts more clearly, after sending the message. This is the announcement made by Facebook’s encrypted messaging on May 22.

If it is indeed possible to delete a message after sending on WhatsApp, there was still no option to modify it, until the date of May 22. But, aware of its delay compared to Telegram messaging which added this option in 2016, WhatsApp announced, May 22, 2023, the deployment of this new functionality.

To edit a message, simply press and hold on it, then choose the “Edit” option. However, the application plays the card of transparency: the recipient (or the discussion group) will see a mention indicating that the message has been modified, as well as the history of the versions of the latter.

With this new function, WhatsApp imitates Apple, which introduced the possibility of modifying a message sent on its iMessage encrypted messaging application, only available on iPhone. As with Apple, WhatsApp gives the user a 15-minute window to modify their message. Once this deadline has passed, the only solution will therefore be to delete it.
