Washington: the World Bank reaffirms its support for Senegal
The President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, met Monday in Washington with the President of the World Bank Group, Ajay Banga. The discussions focused in particular on the financing of public policies, youth employment, the cost of energy and social protection.
The President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, met on Monday September 14, 2026, at the headquarters of the World Bank in Washington, its president, Ajay Banga. This audience takes place within the framework of the Head of State’s mission to the United States.
The discussions made it possible to reaffirm the partnership between Senegal and the World Bank Group. Several agreements relating in particular to agriculture, the connectivity of production zones and the development of the eastern and southern regions were signed on August 6 in Dakar.
In Washington, the World Bank confirmed its availability to continue its support for Senegal in stabilizing the macroeconomic framework and structural transformation of the economy. This announcement comes a few weeks after the conclusion of a technical agreement between Senegal and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The discussions also focused on several economic and social priorities. These include reducing the cost of energy, strengthening social protection, financing entrepreneurship and improving the business climate.
The issue of youth employment occupied an important place in the discussions. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye insisted on the need to strengthen mechanisms allowing youth to contribute more to the growth and economic transformation of the country.
The partnership with the World Bank should also concern the development of economic corridors and the territorialization of public policies, with the objective of promoting growth that is better distributed between the different regions of Senegal.
At the end of the meeting, Ajay Banga reaffirmed the availability of the World Bank Group to support Senegal’s priorities and to strengthen the partnership between the two parties.
