“Aggression”, “intensity”, “suffering together”, “solidarity”. These are the key words stated by Patrick Vieira, the new coach of the Senegal national team, during his press conference to present and unveil his first list for the CAN 2027 qualifiers, this Friday. The Lions will begin their campaign in Maputo against Mozambique (09/25), before traveling to Nairobi to face Kenya (09/29), then receiving the Comoros in Marseille, (10/04).
Through these four notions, Patrick Vieira draws the contours of a philosophy based on commitment, collective effort and intensity. But the question remains: where does the fun of the game fit into this equation? Because football remains a game. Certainly, in Senegal, victory has become an obligation, almost a permanent requirement. But a game remains a game: it carries with it celebration, joy, talent, creativity and pleasure.
We can obviously understand the context and the situation of the new coach. This first press conference, marked by some hesitations, stammering, name-droppings and certain omissions, probably does not yet allow us to grasp in all its depth the project he intends to put in place. You must also give him time to take stock of his new environment and give substance to his ideas.
But Patrick Vieira himself indicated that discussions around his appointment had started since the World Cup final, on July 19, 2026. Two months during which he therefore had time to think about the strategy he wishes to implement with the Lions.
The French technician admitted not knowing enough about local Senegalese football. Nothing surprising for a coach who spent most of his career as a footballer and coach abroad. He also suggested that he had not yet mastered all the realities of African football, explaining in particular that he wanted to rely on personalities like Khalilou Fadiga and El Hadji Diouf to benefit from their knowledge of the continent and its specificities.
But it would be more surprising if the new coach forgot what constitutes the very essence of football: talent and the pleasure of playing.
Patrick Vieira was a defensive player, but one whose talent combined well with aggression and intensity. During his career, he played alongside players who made talent and creativity their trademark. Zinedine Zidane, Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, among others. Footballers with whom he shared the field, the demands of the very high level, but also this ability to transform football into a spectacle.
This is perhaps where the real meeting point of these first outings lies. Beyond aggressiveness, intensity, the ability to suffer together and solidarity, the first three matches of this new era will allow us to see what place Patrick Vieira will give to talent, pleasure and the happiness of playing football.
The appointment is made. In Maputo, Nairobi, then Marseille, we will now have to see if the principles announced at the press conference will find their translation on the ground, and if the pleasure of the game will also be there with the Lions.
