GEOFFREY Mwamba’s isolation from the UPND is aimed at finishing him politically so that when he is finally replaced with Chishimba Kambwili as 2021 running mate, there will be no internal upheaval, PF deputy media director Antonio Mwanza has said.

Mr. Mwanza said in an interview yesterday that the reality is slowly dawning on the UPND as its schemes to undermine Mr. Mwamba were being laid bare by their own vice president.

“There is a deep leadership struggle within the UPND and this emanates from the fact that Mr. Hichilema has been for a long time scheming to replace Mr. Mwamba with Chishimba Kambwili as running mate for 2021.

“That scheme has been going on for a long time and GBM is fully aware about this and that is why during the press briefing they had a fortnight ago, he took strong exception against UPND members. He took a serious swipe against them because he is aware of the betrayal that he is suffering,” Mr. Mwanza said.

He said for a long time, Mr. Hichilema has been looking for ways of getting rid of GBM but that he had failed to dismiss him in the same way he dismissed Canisius Banda and many others because GBM had invested a lot in UPND and commands a considerable following within the party.

He said GBM was fully aware of plans to finish him politically and that this was why he had gone “ballistic” on anyone trying to stand in his way as he could not continue pretending all was well.

“They are simply trying to weaken his political strength and finish him before replacing him with Mr. Kambwili.

Mr. Hichilema knows that if he is to fire GBM now and replace him with someone else, it will wreak havoc and because of that, he has been scheming to remove him from the political scene by isolating him.

“GBM has been isolated from all political activities within UPND. They tried to isolate him with the aim of making him irrelevant so that he can lose political value and that by the time he is replaced, they would have been no upheaval within the party. I challenge Mr. Hichilema to deny he has been scheming to replace GBM,” Mr Mwanza said.
