“I have decided to join the PF because I cannot understand the vision of the MMD anymore. I think the people of Zambia are ready for change and that change can only be achieved through the Patriotic Front. The change that I am talking about is the change that the Zambian people believe in and the change that the Patriotic Front understands,” Patrick said in the run up to the 2011 elections.
Mr. Hichilema went on to misunderstand this very simple statement and took it that it was Patrick Mwanawasa’s move that took victory to the Patriotic Front. And so, in 2016, he invited Mulenga Sata to defect to the UPND in a bid tk replicate Patrick Mwanawasa’s feat. Mulenga left his late father’s party, the Patriotic Front!
“We understand the difficulties and troubles Mulenga Sata had to face when making a decision to leave his late father’s party, the Patriotic Front, to join the UPND. But like many great leaders, Mulenga, who is a Lusaka Province Minister and also served as State House Deputy Minister and is also the former Mayor of Lusaka has chosen to be on the right side of history. He has chosen to put national before personal interest,” said Mr. Hichilema.
Mr. Hichilema lost the 2016 General Elections and Mulenga Sata defected back to the Patriotic Front. Copycat politics signifies politics of self preservation as opposed to it being a vehicle for development. Having transformed Zambia in a way no other previous government has done since independence, the only threat to the Patriotic Front is the Patriotic Front itself.
You can’t change any government by fighting it but coming up with a verifiable alternative development agenda that renders the existing one obsolete. Do you see the current opposition going this path when it’s easier to insult President Edgar Lungu? Your guess is as good as mine.
