Somalia: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud escapes an assassination attempt in Al-Shabaab
The Somali government confirmed that the explosion that occurred on Tuesday in Mogadishu was an attempted assassination against President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, awarded to the Al-Shabaab terrorist group.
According to the Ministry of Information, the presidential convoy was referred to around 10:32 am (07:32 GMT) in the Xamar-Jajab district, in Mogadiscio. The president went to the capital’s international airport to join the troops deployed on the front in the state of Hirshabelle. “The attack failed, and the president arrived safely at his destination as planned”said the ministry.
He added that “This cowardly act, having caused dead and wounded among innocent civilians, testifies to the growing despair of the group, while they undergo continuous defeats against the Somali National Army. »»
The security forces opened an investigation into this attack which took place near a highly secure area of the capital. “Thanks to the unity of our people and the support of our international partners, we guarantee peace and lasting stability for Somalia”said the ministry.
Hussein Sheikh Ali, National Security Advisor to the President, said President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was safe and was in the cities of the front line. The Al-Shabaab terrorist group, affiliated with Al-Qaeda, claimed the attack, adding that it has targeted the presidential convoy on the road to the airport.
