Reforestation campaign in Guinguinéo: A target of 6,000 plants set in the department!

The prefect of the Guinguinéo department, Marième Pouye Anne, chaired, on Saturday, the official launch of the reforestation campaign in several municipalities in the department. For this edition, the administrative authority has set a target of 6,000 plants to be planted in the 12 municipalities.

The 43rd edition of the reforestation campaign in the Guinguinéo department was officially launched on Saturday, in the presence of the Secretary General of the Ministry of the Environment, Fodé Fall and several administrative and territorial authorities. After a first stop at the University of Sine Saloum El Hadji Ibrahima Niass (USSEIN), the delegation went successively to Khelcom Birame, Fass Barigo and Ourour, where plants were planted. “Last year, we had a goal of 3,000 plants. This year, we are aiming for double that number,” declared the prefect of Guinguinéo.

Placed under the theme “Plants, responsibility to communities”, the operation will be extended to all 12 municipalities in the department. For Marième Pouye Anne, this campaign is part of the need to strengthen the resilience of territories to the effects of climate change. “Our country is in the midst of a reforestation campaign. We must strengthen our resilience to face climate change. Reforestation is not just a matter for the Water and Forestry services. This requires everyone’s involvement,” she stressed.

The administrative authority praised the commitment of the various services mobilized, but also that of the communities, called upon to play a decisive role in the preservation of the plants planted. “We take advantage of these activities to raise awareness among the population. They must play their part by participating in the safeguarding of this project,” she insisted, while magnifying the involvement of the mayors of the different targeted localities.

On behalf of the Minister of the Environment, Fodé Fall welcomed the initiative and insisted on the need for strong community involvement. At the same time, he reaffirmed his department’s desire to support the campaign. “We want to make the Kaolack region a pilot project. As a result, we will mobilize the ministry’s resources to support this project. We plan to return in a year, not to reforest, but to see the results of the efforts made,” assured the Secretary General of the Ministry of the Environment.
