Recently, President Lungu, who is the Chairperson of the SADC organ of Defense and Politics, received an official electoral complaint from the governor of Kinshasa as well as the opposition political parties, culminating in the emergency joint heads of state summit of SADC and the International Conference – ICGR. President Lungu was concerned with the situation in the DRC and desired to see a peaceful electoral process which today has led to a milestone presidential election result that has seen, for the first time since independence, an opposition candidate declared winner.
As the Bible teaches us in Luke 4:16-30, “No prophet is accepted in his home town.” When President Lungu saw it fit to attend an urgent consultative meeting with his South African counterpart President Cyril Ramaphosa on the DRC electoral process, word went round that he had left for South Africa to seek medical attention. His trip on the other hand, was necessitated by information that the election officials had said voters would have to wait another week for the preliminary results of the election that was held at the end of last year.
There is need for Zambians to show patriotism and desist from taking petty partisan politics beyond our boarders. Mr. Lungu has not done this in his personal capacity but as Head of State of the Republic of Zambia and we must all be proud, irrespective of our political affiliations, that he has shown impeccable leadership as Chairperson of the SADC organ of Defense and Politics over this delicate issue. It’s my hope that the Zambian Press will share Zambia’s latest achievement and not dwell on whether Hon. Kambwili should attend the inter party dialogue as an NDC Consultant.
