NGOCC CONGRATULATES HON. ELIZABETH PHIRI
The Non-governmental Gender Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) congratulates Hon. Elizabeth Phiri over her appointment as Gender Minister, replacing the late Kasenengwa Member of Parliament Hon. Victoria Kalima.
On behalf of the women’s movement we are happy that President Edgar Lungu has appointed a woman to replace the late Minister. We look forward to working with Hon. Phiri to accelerate the gender agenda and ensure that women also assume their rightful status in the country’s development agenda. We urge Hon. Phiri to actualize and operationalize the Gender Equity and Equality Act (GEEA) as one of her priorities. NGOCC is available to share our perspectives to bring about an effective gender machinery at national level.
On the other hand, NGOCC regrets that the two major political parties, the Patriotic Front (PF) and United Party for National Development (UPND) have adopted male candidates in the Kasenengwa constituency Bye-Election. We expected the two parties to lead by example and ensure that women’s participation in politics and decision making is enhanced. It is totally unacceptable that the number of women in Parliament remains unacceptably low at 18 percent. Our political leadership needs to see this as an area of concern needing immediate redress.
We therefore urge political parties that have not yet adopted candidates for the Kasenengwa Parliamentary seat to consider women in this regard.
