Lions Weekend: the Senegalese make Europe vibrate
Nicolas Jackson on fire, Tidiam Gomis scoring with Leipzig, Yehvann Diouf decisive with Nice and Sadibou Sané solid against Lille: the Lions livened up the European pitches this weekend. Overview of the Senegalese performances on European pitches.
Jackson and Mbaye correct Iliman Ndiaye
The clash between Aston Villa and Manchester City turned to the advantage of the Villans, carried by a particularly inspired Nicolas Jackson. On Saturday, the Senegalese striker scored both goals for his team in a 2-1 victory which ended the Citizens’ invincibility in the league this season. Jackson got his team going in the 6th minute, before regaining the lead for Aston Villa on the hour mark. In the 60th minute, he completed an action initiated by Ibrahim Mbaye, who had come on a minute earlier. This second goal allowed the Aston Villa men to take the lead definitively. Opposite, Iliman Ndiaye also stood out. Manchester City’s Senegalese striker provided the assist for Erling Haaland’s equalizer in the 52nd minute. But this contribution was not enough to avoid defeat for the Citizens. This meeting will have highlighted three Senegalese internationals, each of whom contributed to one of the goals scored. For Jackson, this double constitutes another notable performance since his arrival at Aston Villa. He brings his total of Premier League goals to four and his total of goals in all competitions to seven.
Sadibou Sané solid, Lamine Camara at fault on the Gones goal
AS Monaco and Lille neutralized each other (1-1), Sunday, during the 8th day of Ligue 1. Starting in the axis of the Monegasque defense, Sadibou Sané delivered a solid performance, with 11 balls recovered, according to the statistics recorded. The Senegalese defender was active in the interventions and the first restarts, contributing to the resistance of his team against the Lille offensives. His compatriot Lamine Camara, on the other hand, had a difficult time. The Monegasque midfielder lost the ball in his own half under pressure from Ngal’ayel Mukau, an error exploited by Lille to open the scoring. After a deep pass from Soriba Diaoune, Ethan Mbappé concluded the action in the 24th minute. Despite this costly loss of ball, Camara continued to invest in duels and recovery. Monaco finally snatched a draw thanks to Edan Diop in the 74th minute.
Yehvann Diouf saves Nice after his blunder
In French Ligue 1, Yehvann Diouf experienced an evening full of emotions with OGC Nice. Traveling to Brest on Friday, the Senegalese goalkeeper and his teammates won 2-1 after falling behind. Surprised by Ludovic Ajorque in the 15th minute, the Nice goalkeeper had to wait until the end of the match to experience his decisive moment. While Brest had the opportunity to come back from the penalty spot in added time, Diouf repelled Kenny Lala’s attempt in the 90th + 10 minute. A decisive save which allowed the Aiglons to maintain their advantage and leave with the three points. The Senegalese goalkeeper thus confirms his ability to respond in moments of high pressure.
Pape Moussa Fall scores his eighth goal with Metz
In French Ligue 2, Pape Moussa Fall also found the net. The FC Metz striker opened the scoring in the 9th minute against Dunkirk on Friday. Despite this favorable start, the Messins did not manage to maintain their advantage. Opa Sangante equalized for Dunkirk in the 65th minute, sealing the score at 1-1. For Fall, this achievement nevertheless constitutes a reason for satisfaction in a meeting where his team let victory slip away. The Senegalese quickly allowed Metz to take the lead, without this being enough to make a difference in the standings.
Mamour Ndiaye keeps clean sheets
In Saint-Étienne, Mamour Ndiaye continues his apprenticeship in goal. The young Senegalese goalkeeper played another meeting as a starter with the Greens on Saturday, when they hosted Nantes in Ligue 2. Saint-Étienne won 1-0, allowing the goalkeeper to keep his clean sheet. This new performance is a continuation of his first tenure, concluded with a victory by the same score against Red Star on October 17. At 20 years old, Mamour Ndiaye is taking advantage of the playing time granted to him to gain experience and defend his chances in the Saint-Etienne hierarchy.
Sadio Mané decisive with Al-Nassr
In Saudi Arabia, Sadio Mané was also in action with Al-Nassr on Friday. The Senegalese striker played 86 minutes in his team’s match against Al-Faysaly. His participation confirms that he remains involved in his club’s campaign, even if the information consulted does not allow him to be attributed decisive action in this meeting. Between Jackson’s double, Mbaye and Ndiaye’s assists, Diouf’s decisive save and Fall’s goals, the Senegalese hosted several European championships over the weekend. Varied individual performances, with both offensive and defensive contributions.
Tidiam Gomis new goalscorer in the league
Tidiam Gomis continues his momentum with RB Leipzig. After scoring against Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, the 20-year-old striker did it again on Saturday in the Bundesliga against Elversberg. He opened the scoring in the 48th minute during his team’s victory (4-0), confirming his good offensive dynamic. Born in France and international in the French youth categories, Tidiam Gomis also has Senegalese ties which make him a profile to follow for the Lions. His career in the youth selection does not, in itself, close the door to a possible change of sporting nationality. During the 2023 U17 World Cup which he played with France, the young striker reportedly expressed his wish to one day represent Senegal.
