Kenya: at least 06 dead in Nairobi following heavy rains
At least six people have lost their lives in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, due to the floods caused by significant precipitation recorded in the past two days, the authorities said on Wednesday.
The record could increase, warned Nairobi police commander George Sedag, stressing that some victims may have been swept away by the waters, who left many damage and destruction behind them.
Among the deceased people are a mother and her two children, who died in the disadvantaged district of Mathare after the collapse of a rock on their house. According to the first conclusions of the investigation, the river rise in the river would have weakened the soils, weakening the foundations of the dwellings and causing the landslide.
Local authorities have started the evacuation of inhabitants living in areas threatened by floods or landslides.
In addition, the Kenyan meteorological service provides for the continuation of torrential rains in the coming days and calls on the population to redouble vigilance.
