Household basket: the government is banking on program contracts with the private sector

Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo announced, this Tuesday, September 8, 2026, a new approach to reduce the cost of the household basket in Senegal. The executive intends to rely on program contracts by sector, bringing together the State and private actors, in order to build a sustainable response to the high cost of living.

Speaking before the National Assembly on the occasion of his General Policy Declaration (DPG), the head of government explained that these contracts will first make it possible to precisely identify the dysfunctions of the sector, before leading to a medium-term roadmap. “My government is committed to tackling this situation head-on through State-Private Sector program contracts in order to diagnose, down to the smallest detail, the flaws and propose a medium-term strategy,” he assures.

According to him, the household basket reacts strongly to price fluctuations, because several consumer products occupy an important place there: raw cereals, bread, meat, fresh fish, oils, sugar, fresh vegetables and milk.

The Prime Minister stressed that this vulnerability is accentuated during the winter, a period when meat, fishing products and fresh vegetables become particularly sensitive to price variations, even though these foodstuffs are, for the most part, produced and sold locally. “This situation is exacerbated during the rainy season for meat, fish products and fresh vegetables. All these products can be cultivated, cultivated and marketed in Senegal.”

To remedy the situation, he announced concrete measures, in particular the strengthening of storage capacities and an intensification of controls throughout the national territory.
