This September 5, 2023, a crucial step towards resolving the political crisis in Gabon was taken with the meeting between General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, president of the transition, and Central African President Faustin-Archange Touadéra. This meeting, orchestrated by the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), aims to facilitate a rapid return to constitutional order after the coup d’état against Ali Bongo Ondimba.
ECCAS designated the President of the Central African Republic as the “facilitator of the political process” in Gabon, tasking Touadéra with engaging in talks with all Gabonese stakeholders and the country’s partners. This mediation is part of regional efforts aimed at restoring stability and institutional legitimacy in Gabon.
The presence of the Central African president in Libreville marks a significant step in the quest for a peaceful solution to the Gabonese crisis. The talks between General Oligui Nguema and Faustin-Archange Touadéra aim to create an inclusive dialogue that brings together all stakeholders and international partners to find consensus on the return to constitutional order. As a reminder, ECCAS suspended Gabon following the coup d’état which overthrew President Ali Bongo.
